Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine workers¡¯ oral health behaviors and needs of oral health education, to prepare basic data for oral health promotion of workers.

Methods: The study subject were 401 workers fi-om 5 worlting places in Iksan, and they were selected by the convenient sampling method. Data for this study was obtained by self-administrated questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of oral health behaviors which the subjective laowledge on the oral health, the interest on the oral health, and dental utilization and needs of oral heath education which includes the recognition on the necessity of the oral health education and both contents and method of preferred oral health education, etc. The collected data were summarized in percentage and mean value, and the socio-demographic factors relevant to oral health behaviors and needs of oral health
education were analyzed by the multiple logistic regression.

Results: About 213 of the workers was interested in the oral health to a high degree and had the recognition of oral health as an important health issue; however, they thought that their level of laowledge on the oral health was low and their oral health status was below the average. The worlters¡¯ dental utilization rate per year was 5 1.6%. The factors which were related the dental utilization were the age, the education level, and marriage state. If a worlter has a higher age, received higher education, and is married, that worlter tended to use more of the dental service. The ratio of the workers who had
received the oral health education was only about 34.5%, and about 93.9% of workers said that the oral health education was necessary. 64.2% of respondents said that they did not have the oral health education as there had been no chance for it. It appeared that most worlters preferred the lecture as a method of the oral health education, the periodontal disease as a topic, 1 year as the periodic education, and the workplace as a place for the education.

Conclusions: These results show that worlters have high interest in the oral health and think that their level of knowledge on the oral health is low. This means that the oral health education is needed very much, but there are not enough chances to receive this education for worlters. Therefore, the program on the oral health education should be developed more actively.
